Celebrating Toledo’s Legacy: Bermejo Swords Now Available Through Ammo & Company

Ammo & Company is delighted to announce its appointment as the sole distributor to the UK Ministry of Defence and throughout the Commonwealth for the world-renowned Bermejo swords of Toledo.

Traditional Spanish sword making has its centre in the city of Toledo, famous for its history, art and steel. Bermejo is the oldest trademark dedicated to the manufacture of military swords and sabres, and a faithful keeper of this tradition since 1910.

The fame of Toledo Steel is rooted in the mastery with which early craftsmen handled tempering, without any technical knowledge or instruments capable of measuring the high temperatures needed for such magical treatment and transformation. This ability and mastery, the Secret of the Temper, has been fervently protected by all the sword masters of Toledo and handed down from one generation to the next until today, ensuring that Toledo Steel is unique in the world.

Bermejo was established in 1910 in the old district of Toledo, to regain the testimony and techniques of this sword master-craftsman tradition that took the name of Toledo across the world for centuries. Combining traditional artistry with modern techniques and the waters of the Tajo river, and a respect for classical fabrication, Bermejo is proud to maintain this Secret of the Temper that is the essence of a sword made in Toledo, giving prestige and continuity to the famous Toledo Steel.

In order to guarantee the legitimate origin of Toledo’s artisan products, the City Council of Toledo, in collaboration with the artisan sector, has developed the brand Made in Toledo. Customers have the security that, when they buy a sword with this mark, they are acquiring a legitimate piece of Toledo craftsmanship, made with the highest standards of workmanship, based on a commitment to perpetuate the best of Toledo craftsmanship.

The symbol Made in Toledo is a reference and a guarantee, worldwide, of hundreds of years of work and experience, in which many pieces of great value and exclusivity have been produced, defining the spirit of Toledo craftsmanship.

Over the years, Ammo & Company has become a major supplier of ceremonial equipment for the military and police forces of the world. To complement the traditional metal crafts of its Birmingham origins, further crafts and skills have been added over time. Ceremonial uniforms with their relevant regalia accessories complete the wardrobe which, with all the ‘props’, serves to complete the setting for pure theatre for which British military ceremonial occasions are renowned. This includes the Queen’s Birthday Parade, Edinburgh Tattoo, Trooping the Colour, Firing of the Royal Salute by The King’s Troop of the Royal Horse Artillery, the Guard of Honour of The Queen’s Colour Squadron of The Royal Air Force — the list goes on and on. Our equipment is worn or carried on all these occasions.

Ammo & Company has its own team of silversmiths, spinners, turners, casters, platers, enamellists and polishers. As part of this new venture, Ammo & Company has revamped its workshops, providing the capability to undertake all sword refurbishment.

We look forward to this exciting venture to supply the renowned Bermejo sword to the ceremonial world.
